I propose that an object need not be alive to have A life but an object must be alive to have life. Being alive or having life is different than having A life.

The way I see it, Scientifically, life is a measurement of length times width times height times time. Just like area measures a 2D object and volume measures a 3D object so does life measure a 4D object.

But life is a property shared by both animate and inanimate objects. This laptop has a life as does this pencil. Life is a journey from inception to oblivion.

Our life does not end with death. We may stop being alive when we die but because skeletons take an incredibly long time to return to dust then our existence in the 4th dimension does not stop just because your carbon based vessel can no longer provide your brain with the oxygen it needs to continue to form new neural pathways.

So then life is a journey for both animate and inanimate objects and the meaning of life is to exist as something useful to the world for as long as possible.

But to be alive your temporary vessel needs a method of bringing in sustenance, processing the sustenance to get energy from it, returning what you don't need after processing AND to be made up of tiny parts that make up the whole ALL doing the same thing called cells.

Cells are different from molecules and compounds because every cell brings in something to convert to energy and releases what it does not use. When the building blocks of a 4D object can exhibit the same principles of being alive as the whole they make up then we have an object that we can classify as alive. But the test of life as I see it is the ability to feel pain. I believe every form of life from the simplistic to the complex feels pain and that is a test between what we label an animate object verses an inanimate one.

It can be a single cell , a plant, an animal, does not matter. And when an object's building blocks stop processing sustenance and converting them to energy then it is dead or dying.

So then what is the meaning of being alive. To do ones best to actualize as many of their potentials as possible as long as doing so does not interfere with anyone else's actualizations of theirs while at the same time trying to make the world a better place for everyone else's grandchildren.
